Singer Walking / Even Feed Foot Review

Singer Walking / Even Feed FootThis is the first walking foot I've used, but it fits my simple Singer machine well and does a great job pulling the fabric through evenly on the top and bottom. The feed dogs work great, and it is simple to attach. The one I got in the mail looked a little different to me than the picture, but it fits and works well.

Singer Sewing Machine/Embroidery Machine Futura CE350 Review

Singer Sewing Machine/Embroidery Machine Futura CE350I recently purchased this machine (not on amazon.) It is such a LEMON! Constant error messages during regular sewing and embroidery. I spent hours on the phone with service people trying to resolve the problem. I attempted to embroider 5 times. Every time the thread got jammed and knotted. Ripped my fabric twice. It never made it all the way through a design. It might be tempting to buy this machine for the price compared to others, but there must be a reason for the low price right? It doesn't even deserve one star. If i could give it a -5 i would!

Singer 30-Stitch Function Sewing Machine - 8280 Review

Singer 30-Stitch Function Sewing Machine - 8280I purchased this machine as a replacement to the ancient sewing machine in our attic that was my great grandmother's.It boasts of being able to sew through three layers of denim, but I haven't tried that yet.I did make a pair of pajama pants out of a tricky thin, slightly stretchy satin, and it worked impeccably. The auto-tension adjustment is a piece of cake and the different stitches work very well.As a beginning sewer, this machine meets all my needs. The slipcover that came with it is very nice as well - no huge case needed to keep it free of dust.

Reliable 2000U-33 Barracuda Portable Zig-Zag Walking-Foot Sewing Machine Review

Reliable 2000U-33 Barracuda Portable Zig-Zag Walking-Foot Sewing MachineI'm no an expert at sewing but have had some good experiences with an older rock-solid Singer zigzag. This machine is the basic do-it-yourself entry-level zig-zag walking foot capable of handling heavier fabrics and sails. It is nearly identical to those sold under many different names.God luck deciphering which ones are made in China or Taiwan, the latter supposedly a bit better made.A fine-tuned version (at a significantly higher price) is available from Sailrite (beware some of the sleight-of-hand discounters selling that brand though Sailrite themselves are highly reputable).

I received mine a week ago and have just done a couple of practice projects with 1" webbing and 6-8 oz. duck.I'm finding that the machine gets hung up often.I initially thought it was from using the wrong sized needle or simply too much fabric.Through experimentation culminating with turning by hand with no fabric or thread, I've found that the clutch mechanism in this thing can barely overcome the mechanical resistance of the spring-loaded walking presser foot, even when not actually sewing.I followed the manual instructions and rotated the clutch washer 180º and I guess it's another one of those help suggestions designed simply to waste your time.

I've ordered the Sailrite Monster II balance wheel and, based on my initial experiences, think a modification like that is an absolute necessity. It's not a refinement or luxury but a requirement for this machine to be functional as the factory clutch is pure rubbish.Right now, I have it cranked down so tight I can't unscrew it, but it still slips constantly.

My only other complaint is minor. The foot controller is pretty flimsy but that's not a surprise. It's asinine though that the cord from the machine to the foot controller is so short it barely reaches the floor from a kindergarten-sized table. The A/C plug end is plenty long. That's just very sloppy quality control and I'm going to have to splice a longer wire, simple really, but not something most people would want to deal with.

Bottom line, if you plan to add an enhanced balance wheel with positive mechanical engagement, everything else seems reasonably functional and solid. If you think you can use this as shipped, in my opinion, not a good choice.

Kenmore Serger Sewing Machine Review

Kenmore Serger Sewing MachineThe previous reviewer obviously has no idea how to use a serger if it took an hour to thread and was that difficult to operate. This machine works very well.Easy to use and the dvd that comes with it is very good.I would highly recommend this serger.I got on sale for $199 at Sears and have been very happy with it.

Singer(R) Inspiration 4210 Review

Singer(R) Inspiration 4210This is an update to my previous review (see below the **** for the original review).

The replacement 4210 sent to me directly from Singer is a VAST improvement over the 4210 I bought in Spring 2007. It's very obvious that the model has had improvements over the past two years of continued manufacture. I've put the new 4210 through its paces and am well pleased with it! What a relief!

****Original review:
I've been sewing for 30 years on an old model Singer, and am an experienced seamstress. I bought this for the features my vintage Singer doesn't have, such as zig-zag stitches, stitching for stretch knits, and buttonhole stitching.

I've had problems from the start with the 4210. The "birdnesting" problem with the bobbin if the machine is not threaded under tension is ridiculous, and documented on Singer's support site. Having to purchase specific bobbins is just wrong. Making buttonholes is not the piece-of-cake that is claimed. It's not intuitive how to change presser feet. The bobbin case jams repeatedly. When using four layers of lightweight cotton and stitching them, birdnesting occurs; you can pretty much ruling out sewing any heavy or thick fabrics with this machine. Birdnesting also occurs when stitching stretch knits. The tension lever doesn't seem to have any effect on tension at all. I could go on and on.

I've called Singer support and they've offered to give me a new 4210 and send this problem one back. I'll take them up on that, and hope that in the two years since I bought my 4210 some of these problems may have been worked out in manufacturing. We'll see.

Singer CE-100 Futura Sewing and Embroidery Machine Review

Singer CE-100 Futura Sewing and Embroidery MachineWhat makes this product so attractive is that by connecting it to a computer you can get an endless amount of embroidery designs. It is also a full feature sewing machine.
I bought this item for my wife's birthday. It does everything that is advertised. The sewing functions are straight forward, and everything worked as it should.
The embroidery isn't as staight forward. The instructions are very poor, and limited. Although I have to admit, that I figured most of it out fairly quickly. The embroidery is slow, and of course you have to change thread for every color change in your pattern. The designs came out looking good. I also downloaded some free designs from other sites, and they worked just as well.
My problem with this machine is two fold. The one we bought broke after only a few hours of use. It was a minor problem. The bobbin holder had a crack where the tension screw goes in. At first everything was fine, but within a few hours the thread started catching in the crack until it was unusable. I'm sure that this won't be a problem for most customers.
The second problem is much more severe in my opinion. No one has parts for the machine, and it's near impossible to even get a parts list. One item that doesn't come with the machine that my wife wanted was a zipper foot. The part number for that item was listed in the book, but when I went to find it, absolutely no one had it. I even wrote Singer's part's department, and they wrote back telling me to call.
It's a neat machine. As long as you get one that works, and aren't concerned about parts availability, I don't think you can find a better ebroidery machine for less money.

Singer 7466 Electronic Sewing Machine Review

Singer 7466 Electronic Sewing MachineLove this!Sews beautifully, lots of great stitches, very easy to switch out the pressure foot.Only drawback I've found was the bobbin cover is easy to misplace. It pops off completely to put on a new bobbin. But I've just made of habit of putting it in the same spot when changing bobbins so I won't lose it.I really like the little cubby hole storage box on the front to store the extra feet.Very nice machine, and I'm very happy with it.

Singer 34-Stitch Esteem Sewing Machine - White (1732) Review

Singer 34-Stitch Esteem Sewing Machine - WhiteI would say this is an okay machine for beginners. I say this because some seem to have the impression that the machine is supposed to do everything for you. First read the manual thoroughly so you can understand how the machine works. Second, in the beginning, my stitches kept getting tangled, and I realized all I needed to do was fix the tension. You just have to play around with the machine to understand how it works. Second, the "S" button is not in the stitch selector dial but stitch length. I've made 4 different projects with this machine so far and I love it. Works well and I'm sure I'll have this one for a while.

Carry and Cover Sewing Case - Blue/ Brown Review

Carry and Cover Sewing Case - Blue/ BrownI bought this case at a Target store. It was marked down because it was very dirty, but it wiped clean with water andwith no difficulty. The only thing I would suggest is to measure your machine before buying. It said "Singer" on the cardboard wrapping. I have a Singer, but it wouldn't fit until I removed my upper thread holders. I love it because it is easy to pick up and it holds my presser foot and accessories.

Singer DF151_G Adjustable Dress Form, Gray, Medium Review

Singer DF151_G Adjustable Dress Form, Gray, MediumI decided to order this dressform, so that I would no longer have to struggle with measurements and guesswork.Right now, I do not use patterns, and I envisioned draping fabric on the dress form, pinning and sizing everything up, like magic.
Well, I am still trying to figure all of this out. This dress form is handy, though I am not as pleased with it as I hoped I would be.It is very easy to put together, though I would be happier if it was heavier, sturdier-not so easy to tip or rock.I like that it spins on the stand.I thought the dials would be easier to use-they seem to want to pop back, spring-action, when the dials are turned up/out too high.Alas, I do not find that this model "models" my proportions exactly-you cannot expand butt, without also expanding the hips.I think the upper portion of the dressform will be more useful for fitting.Guess I will have to work with it, it has some limitations, but it also has some advantages that I have yet to explore.

Singer 14SH654 FreeArm Overlock Sewing Machine Serger Review

Singer 14SH654 FreeArm Overlock Sewing Machine SergerI purchased this serger from Walmart about a week ago. The low price is what lured me in, and I have not been terribly disappointed yet, considering what I paid for it. Sergers are fairly complex and take a lot more patience to operate than sewing machines. You can expect to put at least an hour or two into setting this machine up, and should plan on running a few scraps of fabric through it initially to adjust the tension dials, which can be a bit finicky and over-sensitive. The machine comes with a DVD that is INFINITELY more helpful than the manual, and with a lot of patience and several failed attempts, I was able to thread it correctly and produce a stitch. My only complaint is that the stitching can be inconsistent at times, no matter how much I fiddle with the tension dials, but I cannot say I expected a flawless machine at such a low price. This is a nice machine for those on a budget or who use their sergers lightly. I only use mine for finishing the edges of light-weight fabrics, and it suits my purposes quite well. A more expensive machine would probably function more consistently, true, but I'm thankful there's a serger out there that meets my more stringent budget!

When a product is refurbished, it is made to look like and operate as a brand new item should. Many times it is as simple as the box being opened by mistake or for quality checks. Once the box has been opened, that item cannot be sold as new. Items with serious malfunctions are not refurbished, it would cost too much to refurbish them to 'like new' condition. Each refurbished item we feature is completely inspected, rerun down the production line and triple checked for quality before being packed and shipped. Most of the time the only difference between new and refurbished is the brown box and the lower price, which is your gain as an educated consumer. Singer Denim / Jeans Needles- Size 14 & 16Knowing which type and size of needle to use on your sewing machine has almost become an academic descipline in itself. My idea is that if you can take up a hem on blue jeans using these needles, then they will do fine for most of what I do.

Singer 14SH6540 Differential-Feed Serger Sewing Machine Review

Singer 14SH6540 Differential-Feed Serger Sewing MachineTwo stars because it does serge all right.
BUT...it's a bizarre model that I can't find needles for.I've been to my local Singer dealer, manual in hand, to try to get him to order needles for it.Been on the phone to Singer's 1-800 number a half dozen times getting part numbers and numbers of service centers from New York to Michigan. One service center said "we don't sell that machine.why would we stock parts for it."
In fairness, after enough calls the 1-800 number said they'd send me a "sample pack" of two needles... which hardly gives me a lot of confidence as to what I'll do some months down the line.
And the New York place said they'd look into it and phone me back in a few days.
But folks, my time is too valuable to spend chasing around like this.
So... I'd recommend sticking with another brand, unless making frustrating phone calls is one of your particular hobbies....

Singer 1748 32-Stitch Sewing Machine with 4-Step Buttonhole Review

Singer 1748 32-Stitch Sewing Machine with 4-Step ButtonholeIf you don't sew too much it's a good little machine, but oh so frustrating to change the bobbin and every time you use the thread cutter the presser foot falls off. If I looked closer on this machine I would never have bought it, I would have made sure the bobbin loads from the top. If you want to put this machine in a sewing table, you have to crawl under the table to change bobbin. To thread a new bobbin you have to rethread...........summary. good for once in a while sewing and mending, priced good, but not user friendly.

Singer Tradition 2250 Portable Sewing Machine Review

Singer Tradition 2250 Portable Sewing MachineMy wife needed a simple basic sewing machine to repair and make adjustments to our clothes. We decided on this model based on the low price and the Singer name.As we understand there are more Singer machines in service than all other brands together.

We found the DVD that came with the machine very helpful and between that and the owner's manual the setup was easy.Since then she is using it from time to time and, as it fulfills all our needs at an affordable price, we must give it a high rating.

We would have hated to pay more for a sewing machine with more features that we were not going to use. This is a good reliable machine that fulfills our need for simplicity and ease of operation.

Singer Stitch Sew Handheld Portable Sewing MachineThis product doesn't even deserve one star! I bought this for something simple and easy...what a BIG MISTAKE!! It's more trouble than it is worth! Singer 1507 8-Stitch Sewing Machine Review

Singer 1507 8-Stitch Sewing MachineI've worked with those really old, big, and clunky sewing machines when I was about 8-13 years old under my mom's and grandmother's supervision. Now I'm 25, and recently decided I needed a sewing machine of my own. I don't have room for any big machine similar to what I was used to, so I thought a small portable one should do the job for me.

I got a really cheap $30 set from Walgreens, and that stopped working 5 minutes out of the box. Figured I ought to be a little more serious, so I opted to spend more than I really wanted to get this. I am very glad that I did.

I just got it today. The manual is super easy to understand. I'd never threaded a machine on my own before, but there is even a numbered guide right on the machine to tell you where the top thread goes. The guide on the machine plus the very simple instructions in the manual made threading the thing a breeze.

With the foot pedal, it's fairly easy to control the speed. I've read some reviews on similar machines (a Brother one, in particular, that I was also looking at) with complaints of it going from 0 to 100 with nothing in between. Not so with this one.

It's really quiet. It's a little awkward having the top spool horizontal, but it works. It's a little heavier than I expected, but that makes it more sturdy. It has a little storage compartment that's really convenient and a nice way to keep everything in one place. It has a little lever for reverse sewing, which I really like. Comes with a neat little cover that has a slot at the top for the carrying handle.

Overall, it is a very straightforward machine that works great, is simple to use and easy to understand.

Singer 7463 Confidence 30-Stitch Electronic Sewing Machine Review

Singer 7463 Confidence 30-Stitch Electronic Sewing MachineThe first one I got was in Jan '09.It lasted me until June, and I started having a lot of problems with it.It started making terrible noises, sounded awful, wouldn't sew straight, stitches were inconsistent, tension was messing up intermittently I had to stop using it for vacation, got back and it was worse than ever.I sent it in for service (it took 3 weeks) and they sent it back saying they had adjusted the tension and found nothing wrong. It worked quietly for about 10 minutes, and then started freaking out again.I took it back and they swapped it out for a new one . The new one started having problems with feeding the fabric and rattling by the second day.The pressure on the presser foot was off, and there was no way of adjusting it.No way to lower the feed dogs either.I ended up returning it for a refund.

I was really disappointed with the quality of this machine.I wanted it to work well, and it did... briefly. It seems Singer has really lowered the bar with their quality standards.

Even more, it comes with a Drop & Sew system with a top drop-in bobbin that holds the thread exactly where it's needed as users pull the thread toward the back of the machine along a threading path--no need to draw up the thread before beginning to sew like with other machines. For added convenience, the unit provides an automatic built-in needle threader (no more squinting or frustrating repeated attempts), 13 needle positions, and a free arm that makes easy work of pant legs, cuffs, and sleeves. Other highlights include a clear bobbin cover, horizontal thread delivery, automatic tension, a StayBright LED light to illuminate the working area, a heavy-duty metal frame, a carrying handle, and on-board accessory storage. Accessories include needles, bobbins, a buttonhole opener/brush, spool caps (mini, small, and large), an aux spool pin, a dust cover, and snap-on presser feet (a zipper foot, buttonhole foot, general-purpose foot, and a blindstitch-hem foot). The sewing machine measures 17-1/5 by 8 by 12-1/2 inches and carries a 25-year limited warranty.
