Sew Fast Sew Easy's Hipster 1/4 Circle Flared Skirt Sewing Pattern Review

Sew Fast Sew Easy's Hipster 1/4 Circle Flared Skirt Sewing PatternI've been looking for an easy circle skirt pattern that I could use over and over, and this definitely fits the bill. It took me about two hours to make my first skirt, but I added a few embellishments that made the process a little more complicated. I believe that if one makes their skirt exactly as described in the directions, then it would probably take an hour or so at the most.

The only reason that I don't give this wonderful pattern a 5-star rating is that there are a few little things that could stand to be improved. First, the directions are simple, but littered with amateurish, hand-drawn illustrations. The quality of the illustrations isn't so great and it sort of annoyed me that I paid $12 for a pattern they didn't even bother to illustrate very well. Second, the instructions tell you to choose your skirt length (a very nice feature) but to add 5 inches to this number when actually cutting the material. I found that the additional 5 inches were unnecessary. These extra inches just add an additional step for later, when you would have to hem the bottom up considerably. In my opinion, it would be better to just decide your skirt length, then add only a few inches to allow for the waistband and your bottom hem. That way, you wouldn't have to worry about taking the skirt up later. Third, it's a bit annoying to find out that you have to measure out your skirt length each time you use the pattern. Instead of a more traditional pattern in which you cut against a tissue paper template, this pattern requires a little bit of leg work, though I think that's ok since you can choose multiple skirt lengths depending on your mood.

But those three very small concerns are outweighed by the utility and ease of this pattern. If you're like me and you like your A-line skirts to fall to just below your knees, you could also just measure out your ideal skirt on a piece of muslin, then cut that out and use it just like a tissue paper pattern to save yourself time in the future.

BTW, this pattern calls for using 60-inch wide fabric only, but if you can't find a fabric you really like in that measurement, then you can do what I did. I used the Sew Fast So Easy Pattern, but folded the paper almost in half (not quite in half since I had to take into account a seam allowance of 1/2 inch on each side). That way, you can use smaller width fabrics if you need to. This adds an extra seam to fuss with, but I think the added flexibility of possible materials is worth it.

Singer Inspiration w/ No Error ThreadingTM 4228 Review

Singer Inspiration w/ No Error ThreadingTM 4228I bought this machine yesterday. It was so easy to use that within minutes we had threaded it and started sewing.Indeed, I was quite happy until today (a day later) when the bobbin thread started bunching. Within minutes the machine stopped stitching completely!!(The needle thread just won't pick up the bobbin thread at all!!) I telephoned the store and they think it may need timing adjustments!!!Will be returning it in the morning for a complete refund.Am thinking of getting a Brother instead.I had paid more for the Singer brand but am thoroughly disappointed!

NoError ThreadingTM makes threading simple and easy, offering a mistake-proof upper threading system that eliminates missing the tension and not threading the take-up lever. The Surefit BobbinTM makes inserting the bobbin correctly an easy task because there is only one way to insert the bobbin. This long lasting (100,000 hours) bulb stays cool regardless of how long the machine is operated and provides a brighter more natural light than a standard bulb.

Ruffler Foot Review

Ruffler FootPut on the correct machine, it worked very well. In fact I have sewn about 7 "market skirts" - dirctions for doing so for a little girlwas on the internet as a free-bie , and another site told you how to make it fit an adult. Both little and big turned out well.
The ruffler saves a lot of time, and the gathering is uniform. When working with slick polyester, I had to put interfacing on the edges I was ruffling, but, by golly, I had to do so with straight sewing also.
Bottom line: if you need one, call the dealer and make sure it will fit your machine. I bought two through Amazon. One, the generic, cost $15 and postage paid; the other was $32.95 to fit a Janome. It was also postage paid. The generic fit both Brother and Janome, and the Janome fit only the Janome.

Buttoneer Fastening System Refill Pack -100 Package Review

Buttoneer Fastening System Refill Pack -100 PackageIt sometimes works. There are two problems with it.The plastic fasteners are much flimsier than the ones used to attach tags in stores. The refills seem to be worse than the included staples. The second problem is the use of "original" in the product name.I had one of the originals and the quality was much better. The staples were sturdier and it was able to do all kinds of buttons. This one does not work on buttons with a metal loop instead of eye holes, nor on anything but the thinnest fabric. It is not so handy for quick repair, as I used 4 staples to get one button on. It should have minus stars.

Chef's Chef Choice 675 Cordless Hot Pot FREE SHIPPING! Review

Chef's Chef Choice 675 Cordless Hot Pot FREE SHIPPINGI purchased this machine 6 weeks ago.I researched for months, read loads of info about so many machines, of all types and prices.I learned of the brand Janome through a friend who uses a Bernina. She had sewed on one and really liked it.After reading more info on the Janome website, it seemed that for a very reasonable price this machine might be just fine. For a basic model it is loaded with featutes.I have a lot of experience sewing, and know that most of the time I just need a good solid machine, not full of bells and whistles that will rarely be used. Most other sources have this machine priced much higher.Out of the box the start up is quick and simple, manual very easy, very clear.I was sewing in about 20 minutes after getting it out of the box.It is quiet and powerful. Very beautiful stitches.Easy operation.I am impressed. My main reason for this purchase was to get my daughter a good machine. After buying this one I really like this Janome, and would buy again.Maybe Amazon will start to carry more models of Janome. I will check back in after I have done more projects on this, and let people know how it goes. I definately am content thus far. The only reason for four stars is that I have not used the buttonholer yet, or put in a zipper.

Singer 57817 17 Stitch Function and Electronic Speed Control Sewing Machine Review

Singer 57817 17 Stitch Function and Electronic Speed Control Sewing MachineI have had this machine for years! I paid a lot more for it than Amazon is offering. So the price is just not an issue here. The main advantage of this machine is 1) It is Singer (the name says it all); 2) It has an automatic thread tension control (an invaluable feature for novices!); 3) It has 17 stitches (even the one for sewing on buttons, embroidery, and monogram); 4) It is very easy to operate, as a very detailed and easy to comprehend user manual is included; and 5) It is light-weight, compared to those bulky Kenmore and Bernina machines, it is is just a baby!
I would definitely recommend this machine to novices (especially for such a price) it is easy and cute, too.

Singer 30-Stitch Function Sewing Machine - 8280 Review

Singer 30-Stitch Function Sewing Machine - 8280I purchased this machine as a replacement to the ancient sewing machine in our attic that was my great grandmother's.It boasts of being able to sew through three layers of denim, but I haven't tried that yet.I did make a pair of pajama pants out of a tricky thin, slightly stretchy satin, and it worked impeccably. The auto-tension adjustment is a piece of cake and the different stitches work very well.As a beginning sewer, this machine meets all my needs. The slipcover that came with it is very nice as well - no huge case needed to keep it free of dust.

Singer 9940 Quantum Sewing Machine Review

Singer 9940 Quantum Sewing MachineHaving grown up with the wonderful Singer Manual machines as in non-digitalized I thought I'd treat myself to the digital world and update all of my machines at once. Lucky for me I didn't get rid or trade in any of those good old ones.
This machine for todays world is well made but when it lacks some common sense and simple item designs such as lighting up the sewing area and a reverse switch or button that does not need to be held down during the sewing process.....it just spoils all the rest!
This machine does not light your sewing path and stitching area well. I have to get out a desk or floor lamp to do this. At first I thought I must be crazy and kept trying to figure out how to focus the light onto the needle and footplate but couldn't do it because it's fixed. Horrible design for the top notch price they command for it.
Then there is the matter of sewing in reverse or backup stitching. I would press the button and it still only went forward....right. You actually have to take your hand off the sewing material and hold down the button constantly to get it to reverse. This I have yet to do well. The manual machines spoiled me...you set it to go in reverse and then it goes in reverse. Here you would think the manufactures who've been making Singers for the home and professional sewer would keep a clarity of designs in mind always. And develop a button you push for setting the reverse function. Then push again to set it back to forward setting without having to hold it down the whole time. You need your hands to hold the item while it sews. Or to guide it around pins etc. Get a life Singer.....you are letting your reputation slip away.
I would not buy this machine again.
I would not recommend this machine at the price even as low as 500 I paid for brand new non-opened one. Have to shop around but it can be had for 500 18 months ago. And yes I would sell mine. It's virtually unused and in mint condition. Bottom line look at Janome or Viking or Bernina machines and check out how they sew at a sewing center before investing good money for a machine that doesn't fit your style or comfort zone.
And to think I could have bought 2 old featherweights for the same money. Then I'd have four and be so much happier! (Not the modern featherweights the pre-60 machines:)))) When Singer paid close attention to details and gave the sewer what they needed not bells and whistles that turn into lint and dust as the unused machine sits gathering it. (I own 7 Singers including XL6000 & serger plus 4 other including an industrial. And I'm computer funtional.)

SewPro ZZ-401 Portable Zig-Zag Sewing Machine Review

SewPro ZZ-401 Portable Zig-Zag Sewing MachineI was so excited when my package arrived. I have had a lot of experience with sewing, and with sewing machines. I wounded a bobbin, and I threaded the machine, and started to sew. unfortunately the needle thread would not catch the bobbin thread. So, It wouldn't sew. I returned the SewProZZ-401, I'm still waiting for my refund, which could take up to 4 weeks.

Singer 1507 8-Stitch Sewing Machine with 4-Step Buttonhole Review

Singer 1507 8-Stitch Sewing Machine with 4-Step ButtonholeI have been satisfied with singer sewing machines in the past so was happy when my daughter purchased this machine for me as a gift.
This is the third time I have used it. The first two times I had no problems sewing bathroom curtains and patching a couple pairs of pants. This time however, while doing a straight stitch for a hem the needle kept jamming in the bobbin area breaking three needles. I noticed that there was a clinking sound when the needle would go down below the machine surface. Upon further inspection I noticed the needle was hitting on the toothlike part in the bobbin area. I have changed needles, tried to readjust the foot and even tested various fabrics to see if there would be a difference, but to no avail. I spent a good two hours trying to trouble shoot this problem (spent more time troubleshooting then actual sewing). I have given up for now.
If anyone has a solution, I'd love to hear about it.

Reliable 2000U-33 Barracuda Portable Zig-Zag Walking-Foot Sewing Machine Review

Reliable 2000U-33 Barracuda Portable Zig-Zag Walking-Foot Sewing MachineI'm no an expert at sewing but have had some good experiences with an older rock-solid Singer zigzag. This machine is the basic do-it-yourself entry-level zig-zag walking foot capable of handling heavier fabrics and sails. It is nearly identical to those sold under many different names.God luck deciphering which ones are made in China or Taiwan, the latter supposedly a bit better made.A fine-tuned version (at a significantly higher price) is available from Sailrite (beware some of the sleight-of-hand discounters selling that brand though Sailrite themselves are highly reputable).

I received mine a week ago and have just done a couple of practice projects with 1" webbing and 6-8 oz. duck.I'm finding that the machine gets hung up often.I initially thought it was from using the wrong sized needle or simply too much fabric.Through experimentation culminating with turning by hand with no fabric or thread, I've found that the clutch mechanism in this thing can barely overcome the mechanical resistance of the spring-loaded walking presser foot, even when not actually sewing.I followed the manual instructions and rotated the clutch washer 180º and I guess it's another one of those help suggestions designed simply to waste your time.

I've ordered the Sailrite Monster II balance wheel and, based on my initial experiences, think a modification like that is an absolute necessity. It's not a refinement or luxury but a requirement for this machine to be functional as the factory clutch is pure rubbish.Right now, I have it cranked down so tight I can't unscrew it, but it still slips constantly.

My only other complaint is minor. The foot controller is pretty flimsy but that's not a surprise. It's asinine though that the cord from the machine to the foot controller is so short it barely reaches the floor from a kindergarten-sized table. The A/C plug end is plenty long. That's just very sloppy quality control and I'm going to have to splice a longer wire, simple really, but not something most people would want to deal with.

Bottom line, if you plan to add an enhanced balance wheel with positive mechanical engagement, everything else seems reasonably functional and solid. If you think you can use this as shipped, in my opinion, not a good choice.

Singer Lock Stitch Sewing Machine and Activity Set Review

Singer Lock Stitch Sewing Machine and Activity SetThis is a toy, not a sewing machine. If you want to introduce a child to sewing, get
a real machine not this toy.If you want a toy, get something else because this one
is useless.

This was received as a gift to my daughter and after wasting two hours on it we've concluded
that giving her a sewing machine was a great idea (it turns out she is very interested in
learning how to sew), but that this particular machine was a poor choice.

The poor design and low quality of construction of this sewing machine is obvious - lots
of plastic, a flimsy pedal, vague instructions, and things that are not aligned properly.
Those qualities lead to frustration at every turn when trying to actually use.

First we tried to thread the thing. The instructions did not make it clear exactly where
to wind the thread around the tensioner (the physical part had three potential areas the
thread could be wrapped around, but the instructions were not detailed enough to
tell which was correct), but based on where the springs were and what happens when the
tension knob is adjusted we figured out the correct one ourselves. Then we found it
quite difficult to thread the needle (because the needle can not be brought up quite high
enough to give it the clearance that would be needed for easy threading).

After the struggles with vague instructions and poor actual design, we tried completing a
few stitches:the machine made loud noises and vibrated violently when we engaged the foot
pedal (a cheap plastic job that would not stay put because it weighed almost nothing and
was at the mercy of the inflexible cord it was attached to).We got about 20 stitches,
but they were unusably loose on the bottom side of the cloth and we basically ended up
with a tangle.

After cutting that out, and some more fiddling we noticed that the needle did not line up
with the hole in the base of the machine. We guessed each stitch the machine tried to make
failed because the needle did not go cleanly down through the hole. There was nothing in the
manual about how to adjust that, so I followed the instructions on how to change the needle,
hoping that it perhaps was not set properly in the holder, but resetting the needle had no
effect - the needle was still mis-aligned with the hole.

So I pushed the needle gently but firmly in the direction of the hole (even past it a
little) until it stayed centered above the hole by itself. Then we tried to sew again,
but this time it failed to make any stitches. The needle went properly down the hole,
but failed to create any stitches so the thread just pulled out of the hole each time
the needle went back up.We fiddled with it for another 30 minutes but never got past
this point - both threads seem to be rigged properly and there seems to be proper tension
on both, but it seems by aligning the needle with the hole I've mis-aligned the needle with
something below and now the thing can not make a stitch.

As is probably obvious from above, I personally know nothing about sewing machines. But
my mom was there helping us the whole time and she has sewed for about 40 years (on an
old Singer). After we gave up trying to get this machine to work, she took out her
old machine and my daughter was sewing with it in under five minutes - making nice
stitches and getting very excited about making things.

Our conclusion is that rather than get a cheap kids' toy for sewing, which translates into a
low quality, frustrating experience for anyone involved, it is worth buying a basic but real,
higher quality machine.

I'm going to return this plastic landfill fodder and apply the refund towards a real machine.
In my opinion Singer should not put out cheap junk like this if they want to maintain a good
reputation.

Euro-Pro 373 Stitch Art Sewing Machine Review

Euro-Pro 373 Stitch Art Sewing MachineIt worked, but not very well. I bought this to teach my grandaughter how to sew and in a year a two I was going to give it to her. But I had to send it back. The thread kept breaking and it was hard to thread. Also, it kept jamming up. It really wasn't a very good performing machine and very frustrating to use. No, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Sorry.
