Singer Sewing For Children : Sewing Reference Library Review

Singer Sewing For Children : Sewing Reference LibraryThis is one of a series of books for home sewing enthusists put out by the Singer Sewing machine company in the 1980's. I picked up a dozen of them at a library sale and I'm always looking for more. They were part of a subscription series. They are well illustrated with clean clear pictures and straightforward instructions. Whether one is an experienced sewer or an amateur just getting started, each one of these books is priceless. They include buttonholes, zippers, stitching, collars, how to read a pattern, how to set up a home sewing area, which thread to buy- just about everything anyone would need to become a competent home sewer. If you see one anywhere, buy it. Unfortunately, this particular one- "Sewing for Children", I already own. Always looking for more.

Janome Magnolia 7306 Sewing Machine - Quilting Machine Review

Janome Magnolia 7306 Sewing Machine - Quilting MachineI bought this machine.I explained to the salesman that I needed something with some power that could sew thru many thick layers. This is NOT that machine! It jammed all the time and eventually it broke a needle and shot a small part into my eye!OMG!It scared me to death. It would be fine for someone who is just learning and isn't asking a lot of a sewing machine other than basic straight stitching for making simple clothes.Take caution if you are trying to do much more.

48 Large Spools Embroidery Machine Thread Review

48 Large Spools Embroidery Machine ThreadI was skeptical about this set.The title says "Large" spools, and as I've learned in the past, Large usually means tiny little spools that are good for barely one project. Not these!

These threads are beautiful, they sew great (no fraying or breaking!!), and the colors are fantastic!I would recommend them to anybody! They really are large spools... not the huge overlock spools, but nice, thick, healthy amounts of thread.Buy them!

Singer 7466 Electronic Sewing Machine Review

Singer 7466 Electronic Sewing MachineLove this!Sews beautifully, lots of great stitches, very easy to switch out the pressure foot.Only drawback I've found was the bobbin cover is easy to misplace. It pops off completely to put on a new bobbin. But I've just made of habit of putting it in the same spot when changing bobbins so I won't lose it.I really like the little cubby hole storage box on the front to store the extra feet.Very nice machine, and I'm very happy with it.

Kenmore Mini Ultra 3/4 Size Sewing Machine with 6 Stitches Plus Buttonhole Review

Kenmore Mini Ultra 3/4 Size Sewing Machine with 6 Stitches Plus ButtonholeI received this machine as a gift 7 years ago, and have since sewed everything from cardboard, denim, upholstery fabrics, quilts, paper, etc on it, and it is still chugging along! It's wonderful because it's fairly lightweight and medium sized, so it's easy to transport. It's also very easy to learn on, I taught myself how to use it and had sewed very little previous to using this machine. It has three straight stitches and seven variations of zig-zag stitches, as well as settings for making a buttonhole; new machines have way more settings for different stitches, but I've learned to do a lot of creative things just with this amount. If you are a really serious sewer you may be interested in a fancier machine with more options, but this one is wonderful if you are okay with limited stitch options. Replacements for needles and the light bulb have been easy and inexpensive. I've recently been learning about how to reset the tension, and this has been the first time it's given me any issues. Read the whole manual before you begin using it, it will make you a better sewer and teach you how to take care of your machine so it lasts longer. I would definitely recommend this machine.

Singer 34-Stitch Esteem Sewing Machine - White (1732) Review

Singer 34-Stitch Esteem Sewing Machine - WhiteI would say this is an okay machine for beginners. I say this because some seem to have the impression that the machine is supposed to do everything for you. First read the manual thoroughly so you can understand how the machine works. Second, in the beginning, my stitches kept getting tangled, and I realized all I needed to do was fix the tension. You just have to play around with the machine to understand how it works. Second, the "S" button is not in the stitch selector dial but stitch length. I've made 4 different projects with this machine so far and I love it. Works well and I'm sure I'll have this one for a while.

Singer Simple 16-stitch Sewing Machine, 3116 Review

Singer Simple 16-stitch Sewing Machine, 3116The reason I gave the Simple Singer 3116 a one star was because there is no zero star.I bought a brand new one.Do not waste your time or your hard earned money. I would be embarassed to put my name on anything that hookie.Chinese made. The bobbin jammed over and over and over the first day I started to use it. Singer said, " it might be off timing ". It's brand new for crying out loud. The instruction video was superb. But that's where it ended. The product is really frustrating.
Let me tell you about the bobbin. It sits in a half moon shaped depression that you slide a " hook " into and then while holding that easily disgorged piece with one hand you have to slide the race over all that and then clip " dog ears " over each side to hold it in place. Then you take the bobbin and slide it in to the center post. I can't think of anything more prone to failure than that design except perhaps just tossing those parts in there without even dog earring them.
From the Singer Customer Svc CTR apparently this is not new to them. They said the electronic units do not have " this problem ".
Hope this helps with your decision making. I wish I had seen this prior to buying mine.

Juki TL98Q High Speed Sewing and Quilting Machine Review

Juki TL98Q High Speed Sewing and Quilting MachineI really love this machine. I got it about three weeks ago and I was so pleasantly surprised by it's performance. Yes, it only does a straight stitch but it does a perfect, powerful, clean straight stitch unlike any machine I have used--- aside from an industrial Juki, which is just not practical in my apartment. I thought my old Singer was great (and it is, i must say) but this machine has not jammed once, it performs perfectly and I could not be happier with it!! I highly recommend this to anyone who sews a lot or who works in the fashion industry but just doesn't have room for an industrial at home!!!

Grace Machine Quilter Pro Machine Quilting Frame, 4th Rail, Juki TL98QE, Grace Stitch Regulator, Bungee Clamps & QuiltCAD Quilting Pattern SoftwareThe Juki is a solid little industrial machine with all metal parts. It is easy to use and very fast and strong. I got this one to use on a quilting frame, and kept my beloved 1980s Pfaff for piecing, but if you need a nice little mid-arm, the Juki is an excellent choice.

Carry and Cover Sewing Case - Blue/ Brown Review

Carry and Cover Sewing Case - Blue/ BrownI bought this case at a Target store. It was marked down because it was very dirty, but it wiped clean with water andwith no difficulty. The only thing I would suggest is to measure your machine before buying. It said "Singer" on the cardboard wrapping. I have a Singer, but it wouldn't fit until I removed my upper thread holders. I love it because it is easy to pick up and it holds my presser foot and accessories.

Reliable 4-Inch Round Knife Cloth Cutting Machine Review

Reliable 4 inch Round Knife Cloth Cutting MachineProduct works fairly well.I would recommend this product only when you are trying to cut multiple layers of fabric or similar textiles at one time. The less you try to cut the more bunching there is.Controlling the cloth for a straight cloth when there are only a few layers causes bunching and the cut is not straight the way you would like.I purchased this to help my wife so she would have less pain when cutting fabric for online sale due to severe carpal tunnel and hand pain. For the price she hasn't been able to use it much.It rolls over the surface and it does do the cutting but there is nothing to control the fabric being cut while you control the cutting machine.I think it should be emphasized more that this is a product more for cutting thick cloth projects. For thinner projects you can more easily control the fabric with a handheld rotary cutter and get a more accurate cut.

Singer DF151 Adjustable Dress Form, Red, Medium Review

Singer DF151 Adjustable Dress Form, Red, MediumI have used my dress form for 4 pieces of clothing now. It works really well. It really takes the guess work out of sewing if you aren't into using patterns all the time (it works really well for pattern use too)!

My only complaint is that although the size is adjustable, the shape is not. Not all women are hourglasses or curvy in all the same areas and I think that this would better accommodate all shapes if the actual waistline was adjustable.

Overall, I am really glad I bought this, as I am an avid clothing maker.

Singer DF151_G Adjustable Dress Form, Gray, Medium Review

Singer DF151_G Adjustable Dress Form, Gray, MediumI decided to order this dressform, so that I would no longer have to struggle with measurements and guesswork.Right now, I do not use patterns, and I envisioned draping fabric on the dress form, pinning and sizing everything up, like magic.
Well, I am still trying to figure all of this out. This dress form is handy, though I am not as pleased with it as I hoped I would be.It is very easy to put together, though I would be happier if it was heavier, sturdier-not so easy to tip or rock.I like that it spins on the stand.I thought the dials would be easier to use-they seem to want to pop back, spring-action, when the dials are turned up/out too high.Alas, I do not find that this model "models" my proportions exactly-you cannot expand butt, without also expanding the hips.I think the upper portion of the dressform will be more useful for fitting.Guess I will have to work with it, it has some limitations, but it also has some advantages that I have yet to explore.

Juki Pearl Line MO-654DE 2/3/4 Thread Serger Kit Review

Juki Pearl Line MO-654DE 2/3/4 Thread Serger KitThis is my fifth serger and, so far, my favorite. For the last five years I have mostly sewn on a Baby lock Imagine, and then a Baby Lock Evolve. These are excellent, very easy to use sergers, but very expensive. In addition, I found the Evolve, the one I used the most, had trouble going over thick seams. When the Evolve was getting serviced earlier this year I bought a vintage Juki (MO-104) and loved it but decided I needed a more modern one with differential feed and a rolled hem.

This Juki has it all.It is very stable--never moves around when you're serging--has a wonderful knife set-up that cuts through anything smoothly, and has a beautiful rolled hem, either two or three thread. It doesn't have the jet air threading of the Baby Locks, but threads easily.Everything is color-coded.The tensions are also very easy to set.I haven't had any problem with them at all.

I would advise you also to order a good, basic serger book because the instruction book with this Juki doesn't explain how to make the variety of stitches that are possible with it.With most of them you just have to tweak the tensions or stitch length or width, all easy to do on this machine. The electronic, high end machines (that go for a thousand dollars or more) will either make these adjustments automatically, or tell you how to do them on the screen, but I find a good serger book works just as well, and is much, much cheaper.

Do be aware that this machine does not have a coverstitch, or coverhem, as it is sometimes called. It's the two or three thread stitch used to hem knits. To get this stitch you need to buy an expensive, high-end combo serger, or a separate coverstitch machine.I like having a regular serger, this one in particular, and a separate coverstitch machine, like the Janome CP 1000.

This is shipped from Ken's Sewing Center, a store with an excellent reputation in the sewing community.Mine arrived quickly in perfect shape, but had there been a problem I know Ken's would have taken care of it.

Really, this serger is an amazing deal.Juki is an excellent brand;I understand they make the Bernina sergers as well.

Update:When I reviewed this serger it was $399.00 and was shipped by Ken's Sewing Center.I see now that the price and vendor have been changed. It is still an excellent serger but not quite as good a deal now.

Home Sewing Thread 50 Spool/50 Assorted Colors Review

Home Sewing Thread 50 Spool/50 Assorted ColorsI was hoping for more. The spools hold very little. Also, they're not machine friendly. This is meant for hand sewn projects. It does offer a good variety of colors. I thought this might be the case and (because of the low cost) bought 2 when I made my original purchase. I sorted the different colors out and 2 of these spools might last me a bit, but still..... I gave it 3 stars because of the variety, and there is that.

I hate to sound so negative but I doubt I would prompt others to buy. For "art projects" it might be OK. But know what you're getting. Also, as I said above, a sewing machine can't use the small spools.

Sewing Essentials, 60 Needles and Needle-threader, Sewing Kit Set Review

Sewing Essentials, 60 Needles and Needle-threader, Sewing Kit SetI'm very pleased with this purchase. I like the fact that it comes with a variety of sizes along with the needle-threader. I also like the black needle holders, as it helps in keeping the needles organized. With other needles I've owned it is easy to lose the needles. I highly recommend this item to add to your own sewing kits.

Euro-Pro EP150 Tiny Sewing Machine Review

Euro-Pro EP150 Tiny Sewing MachineMy credentials: I began machine sewing in 1966, and for over twenty years was a professional seamstress specializing in costumes for dancers, theatres, and re-enactors. During that time, my own machine was an all-metal Kenmore that went forward, backward, and did a simple zigzag. So I am not one of those people who cannot live without their thirty fancy stitches and automatic buttonholes. I prefer simple machines because they never break down. Literally, my metal monster never once had to go to the shop. Even when I had access to machines with lots of features, I never found anything they were good for. I bought this to have a lightweight machine, easier to set up and put away.
I found it fairly worthless.
It has no foot pedal. The start/stop sewing switch has to be moved with your right hand, so that when you start or stop, you only have one hand on the fabric. This may be passable for stiff fabrics like denim, but can create havoc with blouse-weight (like quilt squares) or slithery materials (like satin or taffeta). There is also no speed adjustment, so you cannot go slower when doing something complicated, or speed up when you're just zooming a long straight seam, as for curtains. Even a non-electric treadle-powered machine gives you foot control so both hands can be on the fabric and variable speed!
There is a light, but it only shines brightly when the machine is still. As soon as you start sewing, it dims to nearly nothing.
Tension adjustment, which is half of making a proper stitch, is controlled by a primitive screw with no sort of marked dial. It only shows direction to tighten or loosen. It literally moves in and out from the machine body, so that when loose it can catch a thread during threading. You cannot, say, remember that you should have it on 5 for corduroy and 3 for satin: every time you switch fabrics, you get to sew samples on scraps until you accidentally get it just right again. The bobbin tension (no adjustment mentioned) is set so tight that on ordinary broadcloth I never could get the stitching balanced: with top thread tension all the way up, the thread still pulled too much to the back.
There is no way to adjust presser foot tension, so you can't lighten it up for quadruple layers of corduroy and you can't tighten it for thin fabrics.
The needle is extremely difficult to thread, even though I have steady hands and excellent close-up vision. The thread guide right above the needle is so tiny and so closed that slipping the thread into it took several tries. The guard rails around the presser foot make access difficult even when the needle is all the way up. On top of this, the shank behind the needle is set so close that getting hold of the thread on the back side of the needle's eye to pull it through is much too challenging. Though my hands are small, I had to use tweezers!
At no time do the instructions mention that different weight fabrics need lighter or heavier needles: too light a needle breaks; too heavy a needle pulls the fabric and often causes snarly stitches.
For [money], you can buy an entry level Brothers sewing machine that has all the features you need (but weighs a lot: I got one a couple of years ago), or for [money]one of the minis that at least has a foot pedal . For what it does, this should only be selling for [money], like comparable machines....

Brother PE700II Embroidery Machine with USB Port Review

Brother PE700II Embroidery Machine with USB PortBrother PE-700II Embroidery Machine / B0013J8F9U

In this video review of the Brother Embroidery Machine PE-700II, I want to show you just a few of the basic things you can do with this machine, right out of the box. This is my first embroidery machine, though I've been sewing for a few years now on a Brother XL2600I, and the fact that I'm able to showcase the basics of this machine when I only received it in the mail yesterday is a testament to how easy this machine is to use. In this video review, I'm going to briefly show how to load a bobbin, how to load the material, how to transfer a pattern from a computer to the embroidery machine, and how to load and change the color spool. I'll also show some projects I finished yesterday, and talk about some potential pitfalls to avoid. (I'd like to show more, but the video time limit is fairly short!)

The Brother PE-700II is a single-use embroidery machine, NOT a dual-use embroidery/sewing machine. The reason I bought a single-use embroidery machine is because it makes sense to me to invest in a separate machine just for sewing, and that way your expensive embroidery machine sustains less wear and tear and lives longer. I've posted a picture of the PE-700II and all the included paperwork and accessories out of the box. The paperwork includes a detailed manual in English, the same manual in Spanish, a "pictures-only" manual for quick reference, and a manual for the USB functionality of the machine. The manuals are very detailed and extremely helpful - if you'd like to see them for yourself, I think they are currently available on the Brother website. The standard accessories are included - white thread, empty bobbins, seam ripper, scissors, maintenance parts, a 5x7 inch embroidery hoop and guide, and a nifty plastic machine cover.

For the video, I've selected a quick and simple two-color pattern that I downloaded for free online so that I could show off the USB functionality of this machine. The machine itself comes with quite a few pre-programmed patterns, including the English alphabet in 6 different fonts, but if you're anything like me, you're far more interested in the ability to download millions of free patterns online. Indeed, the selling point for the PE-700II for me was the standardized USB connectivity. I was wary of machines that require special card readers and special programs in order to work - I don't like buying peripherals (what if they break? what if I can't buy a replacement?) and I hate learning new software. The PE-700II, on the other hand, has a standard USB interface which means that you treat the machine as a removable device, as though it were a really big USB thumb drive. The drag-and-drop ability means that I don't have to learn a new software in order to use my machine and, best of all, the USB connectivity is operating system independent - meaning that the PE-700II talks equally well to my Windows XP desktop and my Windows Vista laptop. You can save the patterns from the computer to the machine's internal memory, or you can just hook up a laptop next to the machine, use the pattern, and then delete it from the machine memory right then and there. I cannot rave enough about this feature - I've already downloaded and tested dozens of online free patterns and everything has worked perfectly. The one thing to be aware of, as I note in the video, is that the machine isn't terribly good at sensing which colors are meant to be loaded. You just have to ignore the color prompting and watch the pattern about to be embroidered and feed in that color directly - or follow the numbered instructions that come with the online patterns. You can reprogram the pattern, once it's stored in machine memory, to have the correct colors, but I never felt it was worth the trouble. (UPDATE: I've since loaded these free patterns into a separate program in order to print 'actual sized' templates of the patterns, and the same "wrong" colors are loaded into the program, leading me to believe that this isn't a flaw in this embroidery machine, but rather in the source program. Interestingly, the "non-free" patterns tend to have correct color charts, so I suspect that the free ones just weren't polished fully before release. Again, just pay attention to the pattern on the LCD screen and you should be just fine.) A quick mention of formats - this machine accepts .pes and .dst formats, which I've already found an abundance of. (UPDATE: And there are several free conversion programs out there that I've found that will convert patterns to .pes and .dst format.)

Loading the Bobbin: If you've used a Brother machine before, this is easy as pie, but even if not, it's a quick learning curve. For embroidery, I just use the white thread on the bobbin for everything. I didn't have video time to show how to wind the bobbin, but it's pretty easy to follow the user manual for this, and there's also cheap bobbin winding machines like this one SideWinder Portable Bobbin Winder if you want to be really spoiled rotten. Be certain to wind the bobbin carefully - as in sewing, a tangled bobbin will cause your pattern to muck up and will bring the bobbin color on top of the pattern by accident.

Loading the Material: The machine comes with a 5x7 hoop, but it also accommodates the other Brother embroidery hoop sizes. Ideally, you want to use the smallest hoop that will work with your pattern, so as to avoid wasting material and stabilizer, but in the video I use the included hoop. The machine doesn't come with any stabilizer, so be sure to have some on hand so that you can get started as soon as your package arrives. You can buy stabilizer anywhere you buy fabric, and it's usually about half as expensive as the cheaper fabrics. The stabilizer does what it sounds - it provides stability for the fabric whilst your machine is rapidly punching hundreds of holes into it. In the video, I'm using a medium weight stabilizer.

Loading the Hoop: I can't rave enough about how easy it is to use the embroidery hoop. I've been cross stitching for years, and opening and loading the hoop feels like second nature. Just unscrew until loose, drop the fabric into place, pop the inner hoop in, tug the fabric taut, and screw to tighten. The 'snap in place' feature for inserting the hoop into place on the machine guide deserves a quick mention - although the hoop DOES snap-in-place, the snap action is subtle, so don't go crazy trying to force a loud crack from the machine because you won't get one. Basically, the "snap" is a half-feeling, half-sound that you half-sense. And while that may sound confusing and intimidating, I can assure you that I was completely comfortable with the process after my first three or four loads.

Loading the Spool: Loading the spool is so incredibly easy with the automatic threading feature. If you've ever loaded a sewing machine before, you will have no trouble with this; if you haven't, I'm guessing you'll have it down perfectly in less than five minutes. I'm going to miss the auto-threading when I go back to regular sewing on my other Brother machine.

Pausing the Pattern: Once the pattern starts, you can pause the process at any time for any reason. Need to trim the thread tail because it's sticking up out of the pattern instead of sticking out the back? Press the Start/Stop button to pause the program and trim away. Need to check the bobbin because you think it's getting low? Pause the program, lift the foot lever, cut the current thread, pull out the hoop, and check the bobbin level. You can replace the bobbin, if necessary, then pop the hoop back into place, lower the foot, and continue and the machine won't miss a single beat.

I cannot rave enough about this machine. It's easy to learn, easy to use, it practically does everything except wipe my nose for me, it has cheerfully used every downloaded pattern and every type of thread I've fed into it, and the LCD screen is actually surprisingly easy to navigate, considering the natural limitations of a computer stuffed into an embroidery machine. The ONLY issues I have had with it so far was one time when the white bobbin thread leaked through the pattern onto the top (I had wound the bobbin too sloppily and the bobbin thread was tangled) and another time when I ran out of bobbin thread and wasn't paying attention in time to switch out the bobbin and the resulting pattern was incomplete - and you'll notice that both of those "problems" were human error on my part. I hope my video and pictures will be useful to others and I had a very fun time putting them together.

UPDATE (08/23/09): Still as happy as can be with my embroidery machine. I've gone back through the user manual more thoroughly this time and found that not only can it automatically stop when the bobbin or spool is running low, it's also very easy to go to a specific portion of a pattern - you can even move the pattern stich-by-stitch until you get to *exactly* where you want to start, or re-start as the case may be.

Another neat thing I've learned is that the little boxes in the upper left hand corner of the machine represent the three Brother hoop sizes most commonly used with this machine - and when a box is "grayed out", that indicates the pattern is too big for that hoop size. Very neat! I definitely recommend picking up the other, smaller hoop size (Brother SA443 Medium Embroidery Hoop 100mm x 100mm) for embroidery monograms and names on clothing and sheets - the smaller hoop is much more manageable, in my opinion.
