Singer Lock Stitch Sewing Machine and Activity Set Review

Singer Lock Stitch Sewing Machine and Activity SetThis is a toy, not a sewing machine. If you want to introduce a child to sewing, get
a real machine not this toy.If you want a toy, get something else because this one
is useless.

This was received as a gift to my daughter and after wasting two hours on it we've concluded
that giving her a sewing machine was a great idea (it turns out she is very interested in
learning how to sew), but that this particular machine was a poor choice.

The poor design and low quality of construction of this sewing machine is obvious - lots
of plastic, a flimsy pedal, vague instructions, and things that are not aligned properly.
Those qualities lead to frustration at every turn when trying to actually use.

First we tried to thread the thing. The instructions did not make it clear exactly where
to wind the thread around the tensioner (the physical part had three potential areas the
thread could be wrapped around, but the instructions were not detailed enough to
tell which was correct), but based on where the springs were and what happens when the
tension knob is adjusted we figured out the correct one ourselves. Then we found it
quite difficult to thread the needle (because the needle can not be brought up quite high
enough to give it the clearance that would be needed for easy threading).

After the struggles with vague instructions and poor actual design, we tried completing a
few stitches:the machine made loud noises and vibrated violently when we engaged the foot
pedal (a cheap plastic job that would not stay put because it weighed almost nothing and
was at the mercy of the inflexible cord it was attached to).We got about 20 stitches,
but they were unusably loose on the bottom side of the cloth and we basically ended up
with a tangle.

After cutting that out, and some more fiddling we noticed that the needle did not line up
with the hole in the base of the machine. We guessed each stitch the machine tried to make
failed because the needle did not go cleanly down through the hole. There was nothing in the
manual about how to adjust that, so I followed the instructions on how to change the needle,
hoping that it perhaps was not set properly in the holder, but resetting the needle had no
effect - the needle was still mis-aligned with the hole.

So I pushed the needle gently but firmly in the direction of the hole (even past it a
little) until it stayed centered above the hole by itself. Then we tried to sew again,
but this time it failed to make any stitches. The needle went properly down the hole,
but failed to create any stitches so the thread just pulled out of the hole each time
the needle went back up.We fiddled with it for another 30 minutes but never got past
this point - both threads seem to be rigged properly and there seems to be proper tension
on both, but it seems by aligning the needle with the hole I've mis-aligned the needle with
something below and now the thing can not make a stitch.

As is probably obvious from above, I personally know nothing about sewing machines. But
my mom was there helping us the whole time and she has sewed for about 40 years (on an
old Singer). After we gave up trying to get this machine to work, she took out her
old machine and my daughter was sewing with it in under five minutes - making nice
stitches and getting very excited about making things.

Our conclusion is that rather than get a cheap kids' toy for sewing, which translates into a
low quality, frustrating experience for anyone involved, it is worth buying a basic but real,
higher quality machine.

I'm going to return this plastic landfill fodder and apply the refund towards a real machine.
In my opinion Singer should not put out cheap junk like this if they want to maintain a good
reputation.

Barbie Lightweight Portable Sewing Machine Review

Barbie Lightweight Portable Sewing MachineI bought this at a local store for $20.It seemed cute, so I bought it.

My daughter was so excited to open the box! Last night, when we did, I realized what a piece of junk it was.It only sews one stitch length, so don't bother sewing anything but your basic cotton calico type fabrics (and it has trouble sewing through 4 layers, so don't think for a minute you're actually going to hem over a seam), it has no zig-zag, so don't plan on washing anything your child sews (the material will unravel) and it only speed control it has is low or high (the low speed could be scary for beginning adults, even) The presser foot has no pressure control, just on or off.The thread breaks constantly, the tension doesn't really adjust and the presser foot is so low in th "up" position that it's difficult to get the fabric under it.

I am returning it today.

Don't waste your $40, it's not even worth $20... I am highly considering getting an inexpensive full size machine instead.

Euro-Pro EP150 Tiny Sewing Machine Review

Euro-Pro EP150 Tiny Sewing MachineMy credentials: I began machine sewing in 1966, and for over twenty years was a professional seamstress specializing in costumes for dancers, theatres, and re-enactors. During that time, my own machine was an all-metal Kenmore that went forward, backward, and did a simple zigzag. So I am not one of those people who cannot live without their thirty fancy stitches and automatic buttonholes. I prefer simple machines because they never break down. Literally, my metal monster never once had to go to the shop. Even when I had access to machines with lots of features, I never found anything they were good for. I bought this to have a lightweight machine, easier to set up and put away.
I found it fairly worthless.
It has no foot pedal. The start/stop sewing switch has to be moved with your right hand, so that when you start or stop, you only have one hand on the fabric. This may be passable for stiff fabrics like denim, but can create havoc with blouse-weight (like quilt squares) or slithery materials (like satin or taffeta). There is also no speed adjustment, so you cannot go slower when doing something complicated, or speed up when you're just zooming a long straight seam, as for curtains. Even a non-electric treadle-powered machine gives you foot control so both hands can be on the fabric and variable speed!
There is a light, but it only shines brightly when the machine is still. As soon as you start sewing, it dims to nearly nothing.
Tension adjustment, which is half of making a proper stitch, is controlled by a primitive screw with no sort of marked dial. It only shows direction to tighten or loosen. It literally moves in and out from the machine body, so that when loose it can catch a thread during threading. You cannot, say, remember that you should have it on 5 for corduroy and 3 for satin: every time you switch fabrics, you get to sew samples on scraps until you accidentally get it just right again. The bobbin tension (no adjustment mentioned) is set so tight that on ordinary broadcloth I never could get the stitching balanced: with top thread tension all the way up, the thread still pulled too much to the back.
There is no way to adjust presser foot tension, so you can't lighten it up for quadruple layers of corduroy and you can't tighten it for thin fabrics.
The needle is extremely difficult to thread, even though I have steady hands and excellent close-up vision. The thread guide right above the needle is so tiny and so closed that slipping the thread into it took several tries. The guard rails around the presser foot make access difficult even when the needle is all the way up. On top of this, the shank behind the needle is set so close that getting hold of the thread on the back side of the needle's eye to pull it through is much too challenging. Though my hands are small, I had to use tweezers!
At no time do the instructions mention that different weight fabrics need lighter or heavier needles: too light a needle breaks; too heavy a needle pulls the fabric and often causes snarly stitches.
For [money], you can buy an entry level Brothers sewing machine that has all the features you need (but weighs a lot: I got one a couple of years ago), or for [money]one of the minis that at least has a foot pedal . For what it does, this should only be selling for [money], like comparable machines....

Euro-Pro 1100 Dressmaker II Sewing Center Review

Euro-Pro 1100 Dressmaker II Sewing CenterIf you are looking for a quick little machine for quick little jobs, this is for you.If you just need to crank out some straight stitches to hem or secure something simple, this will work perfectly.I sewed up a duvet cover; worked fine.

PROS:Cheap, small, lightweight, easy to set up.Heck, it even comes out of the box already threaded and ready to go with a spool of white thread!

CONS:It's small, and simple. Not much room for a lot of material to the right of the pressure foot of course, and you must take the sewing slow and steady, never pull. Not versatile, no zig zags or other stuff.Just straight, straight stitch.

Overall:Recommended for the most basic of sewing -- the straight stitch on broadcloth.Don't expect it to be more than it is; you get good value for your thirty bucks, but it ISN'T "as good as" a full sized sewing machine, of course!Go ahead and get this; it will do your small chores as you spend time figuring out which really cool sewing machine you'll spend serious money on...

Mini Sewing Machine w/pedal Review

Mini Sewing Machine w/pedalI haven'tused a sewing machine since I was 7..so naturally i was a little nervous about buying anything overly expensive or intricate. I am mostly just doing clothing touchups-resewing seems on my boyfriends pants. It's easily stored. The directions on setup were mostly clear. the b/w text was a little hard to read. All and all I am very happy with this product. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good machine thats easy to use.

Deluxe Sewing Machine and Kit Review

Deluxe Sewing Machine and KitWe gave this machine to our 9-year-old.She loves it and has been able to work it herself without any help. Granted she has used my machine with some guidance in the past, but she was sewing away within 30 minutes of opening it.It is light enough for her to pick up and put it away but does a reasonably nice job of stitching as well.We would buy it again.

Singer LockStitch 2000 Sewing Machine Review

Singer LockStitch 2000 Sewing Machinewe tried this item as well as the Discovery Item and both have the same flaws...very difficult to use.Me Mum-in-law is an expert, and she says have them start on a real machine...I should have listened. My 6 year old wants to learn to sew clothes for her dolls, as well as become a quilter.I was really hoping that this unit would have the safety features that allow for a child----and it does, but it is so difficult to operate for an adult, that there is no way the child will figure it out.Threading is very difficult, even for small adult hands, so I simply don't see how a child will be able to operate this.Better to listen to Me Mum in Law, a wonderful and talented woman; a Master of Crafts. Use a smaller adult machine and use caution and oversight.Besides, your daughter will love the one on one interaction with a precious Mom, Grammie, or Auntie!(As a dad, I just don't cut it in this area!)
